No equivalent legislated 2-yearly mandatory gas AND electrical safety-check regime for rentals was found in the other states and territories we reviewed, and Victoria's own regime is changing. Here is what applies today and what changes on 13 October 2026.

What's required right now

Every Victorian rental agreement needs its smoke alarms tested at least once every 12 months. Gas and electrical safety checks, every 2 years by a licensed tradesperson, currently apply to agreements that started on or after 29 March 2021.

Rental providers must disclose the date of the most recent gas and electrical safety check before a new agreement is signed, and give a written copy to the renter within 7 days of a request.

What changes on 13 October 2026

From this date, the 2-yearly gas and electrical safety-check duty extends to every Victorian rental agreement, including tenancies that started before 29 March 2021 and were never legally required to have a check. This is a genuine extension of who the duty applies to, not a record-keeping formality: a long-running tenancy that has never had a compliant check will be in breach if one isn't arranged.

If you're unsure whether an existing check on a pre-2021 property already satisfies the new requirement, confirm directly with Consumer Affairs Victoria or a licensed tradesperson rather than assuming; we haven't found this specific point stated clearly by CAV.

What this means for you

If you're a landlord or property manager with a Victorian rental, the smoke alarm duty already applies to you regardless of when your tenancy started. The gas and electrical duty will apply to you from 13 October 2026 if it doesn't already. My Safe Home's Complete Check covers all three in one visit, with renewal tracking so you don't have to watch the calendar.
