Tasmania's smoke alarm rules are set out directly in the Residential Tenancy (Smoke Alarms) Regulations 2022. Alarms must be permanently connected to mains power with battery backup, or use a 10-year non-replaceable battery where mains connection wasn't required at installation. An alarm with a replaceable battery does not comply. The owner must test every alarm on the first day of a tenancy, checking power, backup, battery condition, cleanliness and expiry date, and replace defective alarms as soon as practicable.
